Australia has about 31 per cent of the world’s uranium, Kazakhstan 12 per cent and Canada nine per cent. Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of uranium supplying over 20 per cent of the world’s demand. In 2009, conventional underground and open pit mining accounted for 57 per cent of production and in situ leaching mining accounted for 36 per cent.
Canadian uranium is used exclusively for the generation of electricity at nuclear power plants. In 2009, 17 nuclear reactors provided 14.8 per cent of Canada’s electricity.
