Responsible Canadian Energy Oil Sands Progress Report

Produced in conjunction with the Responsible Canadian Energy Progress Report (for the year ended December 31, 2009), the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers' (CAPP) Responsible Canadian Energy Oil Sands Progress Report (5.5 MB PDF) focuses specifically on key performance indicators in the oil sands over the last few years. Whereas the Responsible Canadian Energy Progress Report focuses more generally on the environmental, health, safety and social performance of CAPP's members (which represents 90 per cent of all oil and gas produced in Canada), the Responsible Canadian Energy Oil Sands Progress Report narrows its focus specifically to the oil sands, which include deposits in both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Report Overview

Generally, the Responsible Canadian Energy Oil Sands Progress Report is designed to provide practical context for the raw data of Canadian oil sands operations (which can be found on the CAPP website (13 KB PDF) and on page 32 of the report). The 36-page document outlines the outcomes of the Responsible Canadian Energy program, a CAPP initiative that replaced its previous Stewardship program. Designed "to measure [CAPP's] performance and encourage [its] members to find new approaches to reduce our environmental footprint, to ensure every worker returns home safely every day, and to continue to improve the ways in which we [CAPP] communicate and engage the public and other stakeholders" CAPP's homepage provides a summary of the program's vision and principles.

To organize the results of CAPP's program, the Responsible Canadian Energy Oil Sands Progress Report begins from four categories of "guiding principles," defined by those areas that are protected by the initiatives of the Responsible Canadian Energy program. These categories include:
  • People
  • Land
  • Air
  • Water
In turn, these categories serve as the report's main sections, and each section provides specific information on the progress of oil sands development. (The report's specific guiding principles can be found in the last section of this page.)
